As far as the Pope passing. Yes, it is a great loss. While I may not have agreed with him on some issues, the fact that he reached out to the Jewish and Islamic communities, critsized the Catholic Church and some of his predacessors for things in the past (i.e. the churchs response to the Holocaust)and helping to end Communism made him a truly great leader and he will be missed.

Trav & GS - Both of you have raised some questions. I have opinions on them but have no intention of getting into an argument with either of you. Therefore I intend to ignore ALL questions raised by both of you.

In fact, I may not visit this board any more.

Sluggo-

never leave! Truth be known, on this particular topic I'm closer to your opinion than I am GS, Trav or Gae. The only reason I don't get involved is because I don't want GS to shoot me, I want Trav to fix me some more brajole, and Gae....well, I can't go against her for personal reasons, but I mean, hey, that's life...

Catholic priests were not celibate until some Pope in the Middle Ages decided he was losing money. Back when priests could have families, their money was passed on to their wives and children. Now it goes to the church. So basically, the Catholic Church created a haven for pedophiles for money.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Not to add fuel to the fire, the for similar reasons, that's why marriage became a sacrament.

For about 1200 years the Church viewed marriage a secular matter until they realized it involved the transfer of money, then VOILA, it's HOLY! It's a sacrament!

Fortunately, we have millions protecting this sacred institution today!

Sluggo, please keep in mind that this discussion is NOT about you personally; it's about the BS that the Catholic church spews, and then threatens damnation to all who don't accept it.

IN MY OPINON, Trav's right, GS is right, and Reason/Sarcazmo/Craig. is right. The Catholic church is not in the business of saving souls; it's in the business of getting rich.

IMO, the Catholic church is the original mind control cult. While I understand that certain things have changed since I was a kid, I really don't think it's mentally healthy to tell generations of people that if they don't (insert any of the silly Catholic things here -- from church on Sunday to no meat on Good Friday to women having to cover their heads in church to giving 10% every week) they'll go straight to hell. And THEN, tell those same people that they can do anything they want, but IF they're really sorry, confess their "sins" to a priest, say 47 prayers and line the collection box with dead presidents, they're forgiven.

That's just crap.

I haven't had a lot of time to research this, but I can't come up with any other organized religion that believes a living mere mortal has a hotline to God. Don't you think that's presumptious?

I'm sure this is a bad place to axe it, but I've heard Catholics are never buried after 3:00 p.m. How come? Does it have something to do with Jesus dying at 3:00 p.m.? Just wondering...

One thing that steamed my britches was a conversation with a high school friend of mine after he became a priest. I asked him why I needed to talk to a priest to confess my sins if I had already expressed my sincere guilt and request for forgiveness with God. Afterall, who else but God would know what you feel in your heart.

The response I got pretty much sums up what a lot of the Catholic Church is about. He said that I needed to confess not only to God but also to the Church. In other words, making sure the Big Guy knows what's going on isn't good enough. That just isn't right.

Saw a special on 60 minutes Sunday. The former Pope had a seminary school on the grounds of the Vatican. The young American priests that are studying there were interviewed.

They are fervent supporters of John Paul II with regards to his views on abortion, marriage, women priests etc.

You can forget about the Church coming anywhere near the 21st century.
